(me- on the Academic track - got to know a lot of the kids on the commercial track that way. <span class="x1xsqp64 xiy17q3 x1o6pynw x19co3pv xdj266r xcwd3tp xat24cr x39eecv x2b8uid" data-testid="emoji" style="background-image: url("https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/teb/2/16/1f642.png"); background-size: 16px 16px; cursor: default; white-space: pre-wrap;">🙂

They also pointed out that I could skip the last weeks of school before Christmas by joining their training classes that trained kids to work in stores during the Christmas rush. What's not to like? I got paid plus got the store discount to buy presents for my family. And I had a large family.)

And I used that training to work part time all throughout my college years, even in grad school.

Since I had a year of secretarial training my first year of college, I then had the skill to part-time join a typing pool and then was promoted to operate the very first IBM word processor - the MT/ST Machine.

<span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(77, 81, 86); color: #4d5156; font-family: "Google Sans", arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"> <span style="background-color: #d3e3fd; color: #040c28; font-family: "Google Sans", arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">MT/ST (Magnetic Tape/Selectric Typewriter)<span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(77, 81, 86); color: #4d5156; font-family: "Google Sans", arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">, which connected the Selectric typewriter with a separate magnetic tape drive. Magnetic tape was the first reusable storage medium for typed information.
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-78767490760290510852024-03-01T16:05:00.001-05:002024-03-01T16:05:31.480-05:00Driving while unborn
I have a traffic ticket. I happened to turn right on red -- which is legal in California - but got caught with a traffic camera.

Two things. The beginning of the pictures they captured showed me turning at 0 seconds, which means it was still yellow (also legal in California) AND the actual ticket sent to me showed NO money owed -- because it put my birth date at 2026. In other words, I was driving a car but I hadn't been born yet.

The person at the courthouse gave me my ticket back and told me that, if California hadn't contacted me with a bill in a year, I was home free.

(that year ends in a week - and I'm still waiting for a bill)
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-17589239894476010622024-02-26T17:38:00.002-05:002024-02-26T17:38:30.594-05:00Using spreadsheets and other things
I was forced to take a secretarial course after high school. The only way my parents would let me to away to college (a Junior College/ now called community college) was if I promised to take something that I could use to get a JOB! So I did. Typing. shorthand. accounting and spreadsheets. (and chemistry, believe it or not- the male teacher hated having 'girls' in his chemistry class.)

Although I transferred to an academic track my second year there (without telling my parents), you know what? I've Always used those secretarial things. (except shorthand. forgot most of it)

Got a part time job working my way through college as a typist and also typed other student's papers.

Have used the accounting and spreadsheet knowledge all my life. Very helpful during the times I have to figure out IRS Income Tax reporting. (got my spreadsheets up on my computer right now, calculating my deductions and expenses because of being a writer)
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-4829039114062445342024-02-19T11:50:00.002-05:002024-02-19T11:50:34.346-05:00Secondary character takes over the story
<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">And there I was, writing away, and suddenly a super talkative secondary character appeared. Now, I'm quiet and shy.

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">How was I going to write this 'different' character?

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">(first readers loved this character more than my they did my main character, so I did him right. But obviously the main character needed more work. How was she going to sparkle with that annoying secondary character around?)
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-80643639529556070442024-01-30T12:32:00.004-05:002024-01-30T12:32:48.539-05:00Adventures in Grad school - German
My grad school wouldn't accept my undergraduate German language credit, so I had to take German again in grad school.

Easy peezy, right? nope. The teacher walked into the room talking in German and she wouldn't stop to translate. Instantly I was treading water there and had to work desperately hard to keep up in that class or else I'd not get my graduate degree.

We were living in college married housing and I told my husband (also a student) that for that semester, I wasn't doing any housework or cooking. It would be Study German All The Time for me. (yes, I passed. Whew!)

(Some years ago I had met my husband-to be in German class. He was great in languages, so his German credit was accepted by the grad school.)
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-22542053411896349992024-01-13T11:37:00.003-05:002024-01-13T11:37:51.177-05:00Why did you become a librarian?
<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">I was in Junior College. (nowadays they are called community colleges and offer two years of college at a reduced rate). My mother insisted that I could only go if I learned a skill - so I signed up for the secretarial course, but took as many academic courses as I could.

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">In my English class, along with all the writing assignments (and typing other people's papers because I could type - yay Secretarial course), the teacher talked about choosing our profession. I had taken those tests that supposedly told you what profession I was suited for, but it came out vague, right on the line between MEN's professions and women's professions.

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">This professor talked about - if you liked this you'd be good at this profession and if you like that you'd be good at that profession, but if you were interested in EVERYTHING, you should be a librarian. Lightbulb moment. !!! I focused on becoming a librarian - working part time in the college typing pool because - Yay secretarial course.
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-56227486528532286292024-01-08T10:33:00.002-05:002024-01-08T10:33:52.754-05:00Enjoying life
I expected to live until 75. My husband died at age 69 - but he was sick for many years so 69 was a great milestone for him and I treasure the years I had with him. I'm now lots over 75 and yes, I give myself little pleasures. I moved west to live near my children. I completed a second master's degree - this time in writing. I fly once a year, so I treat myself to first class. I live - not at, but close to the beach and treat myself to walking on or near the beach several times a week. Got chased up onto the parking lot by a huge wave last week. A group of us ran from that wave and it was fun. When our family was younger , we couldn't afford to travel and stay in hotels/ motels, so our family brought our tent and we camped instead. By going to various conventions related to our work or to our outside interests, we got to see various parts of our country. I've seen the Mississippi several times, the Great arch at St. Louis, and the grand canyon -- all from the window of an airplane as I traveled to visit relatives. Got to see the Alamo (a disappointment - it's surrounded by city and smaller than expected) when visiting relatives in Texas. Drove to Florida, to see relatives, and enjoyed the bathtub warm Gulf of Mexico. I've been to both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. (never enough time to see everything, tho) I've lived in the Appalachian mountains and have visited the Rockies. (I've lived in 5 states.) I've enjoyed playing in various orchestras, including a community orchestra made up of performers of all ages, where I sat next to a guy who became part of the rock group, Chicago. Two guys proposed to me right after they tasted the pumpkin pie that I made. One of them proposed simply because he realized I could cook. <span class="x1xsqp64 xiy17q3 x1o6pynw x19co3pv xdj266r xcwd3tp xat24cr x39eecv x2b8uid" data-testid="emoji" style="background-image: url("https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/teb/2/16/1f642.png"); background-size: 16px 16px; cursor: default; white-space: pre-wrap;">🙂 I told them both that I was determined to get a college degree before I got married. (got married to a different guy and we both went to grad school together, which was fun.)
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-50854118069886112942023-12-31T16:13:00.003-05:002023-12-31T16:13:54.481-05:00Books read 2023 - Adult Books
<b style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">ADULT FICTION = Read in 2023<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; margin: 0in;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; margin: 0in;">Bradley, Alan. The sweetness at the bottom of the pie, a Flavia de Luce Novel. I hope you had a nice holiday season or are having a nice holiday season.

People are discussing how many miles they walked this year so I gave myself a math problem this evening. I walk a mile a day and then i put my cell phone down and it stops calculating steps

So I wondered how many miles I walk in a year. Activated the computer calculator and multiplied one mile by twelve months. Hmmmm. I'm sure I walked more than 12 miles.

Then I had an idea. There are 365 days in the year - give or take. Multiply THAT by one mile a day and you get -- 365 miles. No, I didn't use the calculator for that. My brain told me "Don't be silly. Do it in your head."

Ya -- 365 days multiplied by one mile a day is -- TA-DAH -- 365 miles.

Geeeezzzz!
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-73662134299854094502023-11-17T16:27:00.004-05:002023-11-17T16:27:51.145-05:00No Thanksgiving plans
Our plans are no plans. For years I helped my mother with Thanksgiving.

Then i became THAT mom and was up at 6:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving day to prepare everything - having already baked 4 pies the day before.

Then I retired from work, moved to California to be near my children. (Could they have moved any further away from Maryland? geezzzz.) Then I retired from doing Thanksgiving and turned it over to my oldest daughter.

This year I retired from Thanksgiving completely. Oldest daughter is going skiing. (broke both her legs skiing last year but hey, she loves skiing. She says she'll be careful) Second child is married to a Native American and therefore does NOT celebrate Thanksgiving. (Whatever happened to the historical fact of pilgrims and native Americans having a harvest celebration together?) My third child doesn't want to have Thanksgiving with her friends this year, so she has promised to bake pumpkin pies for me.

yum.
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-70744127377631288282023-11-14T14:33:00.001-05:002023-11-14T14:33:12.335-05:00Talking to Middle Schoolers about the writing profession
I always ask for two tables whenever I'm asked to participate in the local Middle School display of different professions in the Springtime. (It has a different name, but I forget) It exposes those kids to a variety of jobs they could think about. We always try to make it fun for them.

I have a video running that answers all the questions their teachers have printed out and they have to answer about my profession. (I ask for the list ahead of time)

I have a three foot model of the Wright Brother's Flyer alongside my books about them plus some of the awards those books have been given. I have copies of my books. I have examples of editor's notes on manuscripts. Plus I have a galley sheet from a picture book that shows how they are printed. Plus some folded and gathered samples. (F&Gs)

It's a madhouse of classes flowing in and out , talking to them, and answering questions.

Fun!
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-89481789502525818702023-11-10T10:57:00.001-05:002023-11-10T10:57:12.455-05:00Telling time these days
When I used to wear a watch (when we all wore watches), I insisted on a water resistant one because having babies and toddlers in the house, I was constantly dunking them in water to wash body parts off as they explored the world or needed bathroom stuff.

It wasn't until my watch stopped working on a trip that my granddaughter convinced me that - actually grandma - we carried cell phones all the time and cell phones told us the time, so why wear a watch? I haven't worn a watch since.

I do have a clock in my bedroom from way back when we used those to set alarms to wake us up. (replaced by cell phone alarm) plus the stove and microwaves also tell the time. By now, I've actually stopped looking at my wrist when I want to know the time.
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-23726825736367592582023-11-06T10:34:00.003-05:002023-11-06T10:34:59.580-05:00President Kennedy shot November 22, 1963
There are certain events in your life that you never forget. A friend on FaceBook brought this up and we chimed in with our own memories.

I was in college, practicing my bassoon in the music building in college when someone ran down the hall, knocking at everyone's practice room door yelling that President Kennedy had been killed. We didn't believe him. Then another person announced it and another and we slowly came to the realization that it might be true.

This was a few days before Thanksgiving, November 22, 1963. I lived in a house full of girls, not the dorm, so we had to rent a TV set so we could watch the news. For hours we watched. Nobody went to classes. Finally the University simply declared classes closed and said we could all go home early for Thanksgiving.

At that time I had been knitting a scarf for my current boyfriend and continued to knit it as we watched TV for hours for several days. Yes, we saw Oswald being shot, live, on TV. My knitting became quite tight and after I finished the scarf later, I noticed that the foot length of scarf that I knitted during that time period was tighter making the scarf about an inch narrower at that point.

So many other drastic events happened in the 1960s, so it's no wonder those of us who lived thru them have stark memories of them:
<div class="x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s" style="caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0.5em 0px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word;">
The Cuban missile crisis in October of '62.

The Birmingham Church bombing in Sept. of '63.

JFK - November 22 of '63.

Lee Harvey Oswald killed two days later.

Martin Luther King in April of '68. The contrast between how they lived before WWII and the economic boom after the war must have been a constant surprise.

WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-50032775757913811262023-11-03T15:39:00.000-04:002023-11-03T15:39:04.776-04:00Asking for the wrong person
I was awoken from my morning nap with a call from Social Security asking for Francis. Big red flag.

1) my husband, Francis, has been dead for quite a few years and the real social security knows this.

2) My husband never used my cell phone or ever put my cell phone number down as his phone number.

3) I could hear lots of other people on telephones in the background. (a boiler room of scammers or a call center of scammers)

4) I wish I had been awake enough to give a clever answer. All I said was, "Francis has been dead and the REAL social security knows this," and I hung up.

But couldn't get back to sleep, darn it.
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-39965131445166284582023-11-02T15:28:00.001-04:002023-11-02T15:28:16.146-04:00Do not feed wild animals
Too many people don't know the difference between wild animals and Build-a-bear stuffed animals.

No, a bear is not a nice doggie.

Let's break it to you quickly - bears would like to kill you if you get in their way or think you're threatening her children.

Secondly. if you feed wild animals, they will stop avoiding people (to stay safe) and will begin approaching people - Demanding food and not caring if they injure a hiker just to get into their backpack to get the FOOD.

And if they decide that YOU taste good, that ruins the whole area for any other people. (which <a style="color: #385898; cursor: pointer; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;" tabindex="-1"><span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">is a GOOD thing and makes the story better, IMO)

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">The best examples of 'words meshing with illustrations" is when an author/ illustrator (the same person) does the book. People who write picture books are at the mercy of the illustrator and the editor because of that wall that forbids the author from ever talking to the illustrator. Note - Every recent Caldecott winner in recent years was either an author/ illustrator or at least best friends with the illustrator so they worked together to make the best book they could.

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">Perennial favorite -Where the Wild Things Are by author/ illustrator Maurice Sendak - is a wonderful example of how the illustrations expand the story. (I've sometimes done a page by page talk about this book with students doing a report on Sendak. )

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">Look at the white space and how he uses it.

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">

WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-12983142225793528022023-10-01T15:13:00.000-04:002023-10-01T15:13:03.752-04:00Happy October

Happy October.

Spider month.

Pumpkin month.

Fun for kids

and horror movies for older people. Sometimes I was the only one who knew anything about the publishing world, so the group wasn't helping me grow and they were ignoring me anyway, so I quietly dropped out.

In others, it was all fiction novel writers and I was writing nonfiction -- mostly biographies. I definitely didn't fit.

Now I'm writing mostly picture books and yes, also biographies. So - should I join a picture book group or a nonfiction group? (there are few to no nonfiction groups.)

The two of us nonfiction writers in the large Baltimore writer's association would often cling together, especially because we were published and most everyone else there weren't.

The very best writer's group I ever belonged to wasn't a critique group at all. It was a group of published Maryland writers who met an hour away from where I lived, but the conversation was great! (It was an hour and a half if I was coming from my workplace, but I still attended when I could.)
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-37341182667964181672023-09-09T12:44:00.006-04:002023-09-09T12:44:44.749-04:00It's spider time again
Opened my front patio gate to get to my car one day and hmmm - something was hanging at eye level. When I re-focused, it was a spider web with small spider in the middle. So I picked up some pine cones and threw them at it until I destroyed the web so that I could pass through. Spider gone.

Next day = no spider at my gateway. She had moved into my patio. She wasn't blocking my pathway to my car, so we ignored each other.

Then the hurricane came through and spider and web washed away. Good.

However -- today I noticed she's back, right in the very same spot, blocking my idea of sitting in my front patio or sweeping the pine needles off the patio. errrgggg.

Yes, it's a huge web - with a half inch spider in the middle of it.
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-30702626642035877582023-09-04T11:54:00.000-04:002023-09-04T11:54:03.388-04:00Adventures with names
So you want something to eat?

Walk into (or call) your favorite restaurant. Order food for Take Out. (Or Carry Out? Or whatever that particular restaurant has decided to call it) Now they want your name.

I used to simply give my last name - Old.

Wrong

They can't spell it. And If they spell it 'Auld,' there's no way they'll find your order when you try to pick it up. Or they wait and wait for the rest of your name. Surely it's - Olds or Olden or Oldenham or something more than OLD. (when computers were young, the computers wouldn't even accept a name that short)

So I changed to giving my first name -- Wendie.

oops - nobody can spell Wendie. This is what I've gotten over the years.

Wendel (hey that's a boy's name; surely you can look at me and see that I'm female)

I go weekly to a local place and order a lovely salad and you'd think they'd know my name by now, but no. It's been Leslie and a few days ago it was Randy. I never make a fuss when they spell it Wendy because that's close enough, but RANDY? Really???
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9190201766712405235.post-50066052228960210052023-08-31T08:50:00.000-04:002023-08-31T08:50:05.741-04:00Where's the delete key?
<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">When we traveled to visit my parents, we didn't have a laptop so my husband went into computer withdrawal. So I handed him a pad of paper and a pencil so he could write the memo he was thinking about writing (and sending to his staff - when he got home)

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">Just to pull my leg, he looked at the pencil , looked at me and said, "But where's the Delete key?"

<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;"> I gave him the beady eye and pointed to the eraser.<span style="background-color: #f0f2f5; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">
WendieOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10683371939986973782noreply@blogger.com0
