Branding yourself -- good or bad?

I dunno if it's a good/bad situation, exactly. Different people have different strategies and different comfort levels - what's "good" for me, isn't good for someone else, and vice versa. I think the worry I have is that we're using terms like "branding" that carry baggage with them. Then we start arguing about the baggage and lose sight of the fact that making connections, building a reputation, and creating a platform are, by themselves, pretty positive but NOT required (at least not yet!).
Interesting times no matter what!
