Nonfiction Monday -- Where to satisfy your nonfiction needs

The Nonfiction Monday roundup of blog posts about interesting Nonfiction books is at Hope is the Word, today.  She's still gathering her links, so I suggest you click on over to that page later in the afternoon.

And,
if you'd like to read posts written by nonfiction authors about their writing process (or anything else that pops into their heads), click on over to one of my favorite blogs, INK -- Interesting Nonfiction for Kids.

Or
go check out Nonfiction Matters.  Unfortunately, Marc Aronson (no relation to lovely, talented author Sarah Aronson) has stopped writing this blog in order to have more time for working on his own books and his monthly column for the School Library Journal magazine, but you can still browse through his older, very thoughtful posts.

To Fly, the Story of the Wright Brothers makes the list

Oh my heavens.
For some time I've noticed that some of my books have suddenly become very popular on Amazon.com. Weird.
I had finally decided that Amazon had simply gone wonky because To Fly, the Story of the Wright Brothers had never ever shown sales that high before.

Yesterday I was exploring Marc Aronson's blog, Nonfiction Matters, and began reading some information about the new national Common Core Standards for US schools.
Interesting -- there's a booklist of recommended books to support these standards.
I wonder. ...

(well, you guessed what I wondered -- what any author would wonder -- were any of my books on this list?)

So, there I was, sitting in the back of the room of a fantasy art workshop at BaltiCon, the local science fiction convention,while my granddaughter and her friend drew dragons, exploring the appendix of the Common Core Standards on my iPhone, trying to resist disturbing the workshop with my squeals of glee.  My book is on this list!

WOW!
Oh my!
EEEEeeeeeeeeeee!

Nonfiction Monday -- a wonderful BLOG

Today is Nonfiction Monday.
I had all these plans about grabbing some great nonfiction books from my library and talking about them -- only to remember that libraries are closed today. Soooo, I have lots of time to create a post and no books at home to talk about.

Therefore
I want to tell you about this wonderful nonfiction blog.
It's called I.N.K. which stands for Interesting Nonfiction for Kids.

I was amazed to learn that some of my favorite wonderful nonfiction writers are each posting messages here. Plus there are links to their websites where you can find more about them and their books. Wow -- to have all these people in one place. It's a feast!

Who are they?
* Don Brown
* Bob Raczka
* Jennifer Armstrong
* Kathleen Krull
* Padma Venkatraman
* Linda Salzman
* April Pulley Sayre
* Sue Macy
* Loreen Leedy
* Kelly Fineman
* Vicki Cobb
* Sneed B. Collard III
* Anna M. Lewis
* Steve Jenkins

They describe their blog this way:
"Here we will meet the writers whose words are presenting nonfiction in a whole new way. Discover books that show how nonfiction writers are some of the best storytellers around. Learn how these writers practice their craft: research techniques, fact gathering and detective work. Check out how they find unusual tidbits, make the facts interesting and write something kids will love to read. Explore how photos and illustrations are integrated with the text to explain an artists vision of the world. Consider what subjects are flooding the market and what still needs a voice. Rethink nonfiction for kids."

Go now
and enjoy what they have to say.

And then check out the other blogs who are featuring nonfiction on Mondays here. Scroll down to get the list, complete with links to connect you to these places.

Nonfiction Mondays

Some bloggers are now celebrating Nonfiction by doing reviews of nonfiction books on Mondays. One of them created this nice logo for all of us to use.

I'm planning to use this logo when I review nonfiction books, too.
Some will be new books -- as they come across my desk at the library. Some will be old favorites. And some will be those I really, really don't like.

Stay tuned.

Nonfiction Matters

It was quite a shock to realize that Thanksgiving is Thursday. Yikes! Thursday of THIS WEEK.
The month disappears quickly when you take a week off from the day job.

I sent another manuscript out this evening.
This publisher wanted submission by e-mail. My first time doing this. I hope it works.

Total November submissions is now 5.
One of my online writer's groups used to have a theory that we needed to have at least 10 manuscripts out there before one of them will get bought. I'm halfway there. Crossing fingers and toes. (It's kinda hard to write that way)

If you are an avid fan of nonfiction for children, like me, you'll love Marc Aronson's blog at SLJ. In his day job, he's an editor of YA books. But in his other life he writes great nonfiction for upper elementary readers and up. In fact, one of his books won the very first Sibert Award given by the American Library Association. And now that he also blogs for School Library Journal, all of us can peek into his mind. His blog is not just a rehash of his SLJ monthly column. He posts messages about nonfiction on his blog every few days.

Good Heavens! The auction for Robert's Snow Snowflakes begins tomorrow! Bid for the one you love. As for me, I love too many of them.
